The Emma Press launches call for ‘night-time stories’

The Emma Press is launching a call for ‘night-time stories’ for their debut anthology of short fiction. The call opens on 30th May 2018 and it ends on 3rd August 2018.

Writers are invited to send in up to 2 short stories of up to 2250 words each to be considered for the anthology. This will be The Emma Press’s first short fiction anthology. It will be edited by Yen-Yen Lu, a member of the Emma Press core team.

The Emma Press has previously published a number of single-author collections of short stories, such as Jan Carson’s Postcard Stories. They have also published a number of themed poetry anthologies, on everything from sex to politics to myths and legends. Night-time Stories will see them expanding further into the thriving and innovative world of short fiction in a similar vein. They are seeking submissions from writers of all kinds.

Yen-Yen Lu, editor, says: ‘It’s really exciting to be editing our first fiction anthology. I’m hoping that authors will be imaginative in their interpretation of the theme and I’m interested in finding some serious stories, fantastical stories, and anything in between.’

Submissions of experimental forms of writing, such as prose-poetry and micro-fiction, are welcome along with more standard forms of short fiction.

The guidelines explain: ‘Your story can be about things that come alive at night, like nocturnal creatures who experience darkness as the norm (owls, bats, mice…vampires, perhaps?), or lively/annoying partygoers, or conversations that you could never have during sunlight hours, or simply the night sky. Or the stories might capture the strangeness of the world deserted after dusk: schools and playgrounds, supermarkets, museums, the living room in your own home.’
