Poet Rebecca Hurst publishes debut poetry collection with The Emma Press

The 24th February saw the release of the debut pamphlet from Rebecca Hurst, a writer, opera-maker and illustrator based in Greater Manchester. The Fox’s Wedding, illustrated by Reena Makwana, will be launched online via Zoom on Friday 11th March (details and registration here).

Woven through with fairy tales and folklore, The Fox’s Wedding (9781912915958 / £10.00) uses the natural world and family mythology to explore themes of transformation, concealment and voice.

Hurst’s collection was selected from the publisher’s 2019/20 call for submissions, and was chosen from 413 entries. The Fox’s Wedding is the 8th in the publisher’s illustrated Art Squares series, with illustrations by Reena Makwana.

The blurb states: ‘Prickling with magic and spells, the poems in The Fox’s Wedding lead us down a twisty path to find – what? A prince made of needles? A cursed box? A golden key? Take care and keep your wits about you; if you’re lucky you might just find your way home.’

Rebecca Hurst says: ‘I am thrilled to be publishing my very first poetry pamphlet with The Emma Press, a publisher whose work I have long enjoyed and admired. As a writer who, for the past few years, has been mostly creating work for the stage or concert hall, it has been so exciting to see my poems turned into a book. A physical object that I will be able to hold in my hands, and that has been turned into a thing of real beauty thanks to Emma’s design and Reena’s beautiful illustrations.’
