The Emma Press a Small Press of the Year Finalist in the 2024 British Book Awards

We’re thrilled to share that we’ve been named a Midlands finalist in the British Book Awards in the Small Press of the Year category.

The award, run by The Bookseller, celebrates the independent presses dedicated to imaginative, forward-looking and diverse publishing. It is split into Regional categories at this first stage, with the winners of each region going on to contest for the overall Small Press of the Year prize.

The Emma Press have been named in the Midlands category alongside Bad Betty Press, Otter-Barry Books, 3dtotal Books, and previous winners Sweet Cherry Publishing.

James Trevelyan, Director (maternity) of the Emma Press said:

“It’s a real honour to be recognised as a regional finalist in the Small Press of the Year Awards after a successful 2023 publishing across fiction, non-fiction, translation and poetry, for adults and for children. We are particularly proud to be one of the representatives of the Midlands. We’ve worked hard in the past year to reach more readers and writers in our local area through our Arts Council funded projects, writing courses, partnerships and publications. This award recognition will help further fuel our plans to grow that offer in 2024.”

The award recognises the achievements of publishers in the previous year. We published 10 books in 2023, across every genre and age group we make work for. This includes 5 debuts, award-winning illustrated pamphlets, a big-selling memoir and translations from Indonesia and Guatemala. Check out our recent publications in the first pages of our Shop. We were also successful in June with an application for £28,000 of Arts Council England funding to establish our Birmingham Editorial Readers Group.

The regional winners will be announced on 11 March, with the overall national winner announced on 13 March. Good luck to all our fellow finalist small presses across the UK! Find out who else is shortlisted on The Bookseller.
