The Emma Press

The Emma Press shortlisted for the 2024 Independent Publishers Guild Awards

We are delighted to share the news we have been shortlisted for the Alison Morrison Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award, our first time on a shortlist for the prestigious Independent Publishing Guild Awards.

The IPG Awards celebrate the work of independent publishers across the UK, from some of the largest to some of the smallest. There are 14 different awards categories and we are particularly thrilled to have made the list for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award since our company mission has always been to make publishing and literature as open and accessible as possible.

Our award submission took in our entire 2023 output of publications, writing courses and project work but centred around our local Birmingham Editorial Readers Group. The IPG said:

The Emma Press is shortlisted at the Independent Publishing Awards for the first time. The Birmingham-based publisher has broken down barriers to publishing and brought more people from the Midlands into publishing, as both authors and workers. Judges said: “The Emma Press is a really distinct proposition and does good work to improve the representation of people from all sorts of backgrounds. You can see it going from strength to strength.”

We’ve been shortlisted alongside other fantastic indie presses Barefoot Books, Conscious Dreams Publishing, Emerald Publishing, Renard Press and Saqi Books. Head over to the IPG website to find out more about them and the other awards. The award winners will be announced on 24 April 2024.

Our Birmingham Editorial Readers Group was supported with £28,074 in funding from Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants. This pilot scheme gave Birmingham residents the opportunity to develop their critical reading and editorial skills, and grow their knowledge of the publishing industry and processes. The selected group read our submissions longlist and has recently culminated in helping us select the next books for publication by the Emma Press. Watch this space to find out who they chose in the coming weeks!

The Emma Press is an independent publisher specialising in poetry, short fiction and children’s books. We are trying to make publishing and literature as welcoming and accessible as possible.
