The Emma Press to publish Daughter of the Sun, a full-length poetry collection by Rachel Spence

The Emma Press is delighted to announce the acquisition of Daughter of the Sun by Rachel Spence, a full-length collection slated for publication in February 2025. We have acquired worldwide rights direct from the author.

This will be just the second full-length adult poetry collection published by The Emma Press following Rakhshan Rizwan’s Europe, Love Me Back in 2022. Daughter of the Sun is Rachel’s second poetry collection and a bold exploration of motherhood and “unmotherhood”.

A book about freedom – to choose, to change, to risk, and to embrace uncertainty

In part deeply personal, Daughter of the Sun centres around a sonnet sequence exploring Spence’s time reconnecting with her mother, caring for her through illness and grieving her loss. An expansion on her short pamphlet Call and Response (The Emma Press, 2020), these poems form a tender journey across rebuilding family relationships, the impacts of illness and the salve of the natural world.

In the book’s second part, Spence embarks on an expansive retelling of the story of Medea, reimagining the woman who, or so myth would have it, kills her own children as one who may not have had children at all and who, rather than being a witch, may have been a quantum physicist ahead of her time.

With an overarching eye on the destructive and healing powers of nature, Daughter of the Sun contends with celestial and unknowable mothers asking what we truly understand of them and what we take from the strength of their characters and the longevity of their stories.

What they said

Rachel Spence said: “This collection seems to be about motherhood but to me it’s a book about freedom – to choose, to change, to risk, and to embrace uncertainty as the essence of what it means to be human. The Emma Press have always embodied freedom and risk as publishers and I can’t think of a better home for Daughter of the Sun.

James Trevelyan, Emma Press Director (maternity) said: “Taking us from the heat-baked seas of Greece to the gentle rivers of Shropshire, Daughter of the Sun is a book that dives in head-first to understand mothers and our orbits around them, and surfaces with a tender and nuanced exploration of family, grief and care. Daughter of the Sun will be just our second full adult poetry collection after publishing 60 pamphlets. We’re incredibly excited to both develop work for the full-length market and welcome Rachel back as an Emma Press author.”
